Industrial Gateway for Modbus Device Networking and Data Uplink in Oil & Gas Fields

In the oil and natural gas industry, critical instruments such as pressure transmitters, flow meters, level gauges, gas detectors, and valve actuators are deployed throughout the field. Most of these devices come standard with RS485 interfaces and the Modbus RTU protocol—highly reliable, yet operating independently. This makes it difficult to aggregate data centrally and nearly impossible to monitor them remotely.

The BL121 edge IoT gateway is purpose-built to address this challenge. Equipped with two RS485/RS232 serial ports, it can simultaneously connect up to 10 devices and collect 512 data points, seamlessly interfacing with:

  • Pressure / differential pressure transmitters(e.g., Rosemount, EJA) – for pipeline and wellhead pressure readings;
  • Flow meters(electromagnetic, vortex, ultrasonic) – for real-time cumulative flow totals;
  • Level gauges(radar, magnetic flap) – to monitor tank or separator levels;
  • Gas detectors– to read combustible/toxic gas concentrations and alarm status;
  • Valve actuators– to report opening position, travel, and fault signals.

On the protocol side, the BL121 acts as a Modbus RTU Master on the downlink, reliably gathering data from all connected instruments. On the uplink, it natively supports OPC UA (OPC Unified Architecture). As an international standard for industrial interoperability, OPC UA offers platform independence, robust security (with built-in authentication and access control), and a unified information model. It transforms raw field values—such as pressure readings and flow totals—into semantically rich, unit-qualified, and traceable data that can be easily consumed by SCADA, DCS, cloud platforms, or enterprise management systems, effectively breaking down data silos in oil and gas operations. In addition, the BL121 supports Modbus RTU/TCP conversion, transparent transmission, and OpenVPN, providing flexible adaptation to a wide range of network topologies.

Hardened design for harsh environments:

  • Wide-range DC 9–36 V input, operating temperature from –40 °C to 85 °C;
  • Reverse-connection protection, ESD/EFT Level 3 immunity, and vibration resistance;
  • Hardware and software watchdogs ensure 24/7 uninterrupted operation;
  • Remote configuration and firmware upgrades reduce the need for on-site maintenance visits.

Compact and easy to deploy:

With dimensions of only 30 mm × 83 mm × 110 mm, the BL121 supports DIN35 rail or wall mounting. Its patented rail-clip technology simplifies installation, saving time and effort on site.

Connect every “silent” instrument in your oil and gas field with the BL121—bring data from downhole, pipelines, and stations straight to the cloud. Gain real-time visibility for predictive maintenance, energy optimization, and safe operations. Intelligent oil and gas starts with serial-to-cloud connectivity.
